Kina & Poaka Print

The native pied stilt first called Poaka feeds in the tidal region of sandy beaches and estuaries. Our native sea urchin is called Kina and when alive are covered with sharp spines to ward off predators. The animal inside the shell was an important food source for coastal Maori. When the Kina die the spines drop off leaving a soft green shell covered in rows of white dots. Holly Roach an Auckland artist painted this coastal scene for our 2015 Aotearama calendar. We have used the design for a tea towel, cushion and tote bag.
