The Poi originates from the egg shaped flax bags early Maori used to carry Mao and Kiwi eggs. Warriors then began to swing the bags to strengthen their wrists for warfare requiring the swinging the Mere and Pat. Maori wahine then incorporated the poi into war dances and peaceful dance performances.
