This linen cushion cover features the karaka tree's leaves and berries. Karaka trees grow in coastal and lowland forest and in summer they bear heavy loads of orange berries. Early Maori settlers discovered that they could make karaka berries safe for eating by first baking them, and then soaking them in water. The original painting is by NZ artist Holly Roach.
