Codfish Island or Whenua Hou is a small island located to the west of Stewart Island (Rakiura) in southern New Zealand. It is the breeding sanctuary for the endangered Kâkâpô. The survival of the Kakapo rests on the success of this breeding programme with less than 160 remaining.
